BIF raises concerns over govt directive linking msg apps to active SIMs

The Indian government (DoT) wants apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal to stay linked to your SIM card all the time.
This means:

  • If you remove your SIM or change it, the app may log you out.

  • WhatsApp Web and Desktop may auto-logout every 6 hours and ask you to log in again.

  • Companies have 90 days to apply this rule.

Why the government is doing this

This rule is mainly to stop online scams and fraud.
Many scammers use WhatsApp and other apps to:

  • Cheat people

  • Steal money

  • Fake identities

By tying accounts strictly to SIM cards, the government hopes to track and stop scammers easily.

Problems with this idea

Experts say this rule has big technical and practical issues:

  • Mobile phones don’t allow apps to fully check SIM details due to privacy rules.

  • Even banking apps don’t truly bind SIM permanently — they only check at login.

  • Scammers may still find other ways using fake SIMs or different apps.

  • Normal users may face trouble, especially:

    • People who travel

    • People who change SIMs

    • People who use WhatsApp on multiple devices

    • Office users who depend on WhatsApp Web

This could cause frequent logouts and inconvenience.

Benefits (Advantages)

  • Reduces online scams
Criminals who use fake or stolen accounts will find it harder to operate.

  • Better security for users
Your account will be more protected because it stays tied to your personal SIM.

  • Easy to track criminals
Police can identify fraudsters faster through SIM records.

  • Less misuse of WhatsApp Web
Many scams happen through long-running web sessions — auto logout can reduce this.

  • More trust in digital communication
People may feel safer using messaging apps.

Losses (Disadvantages)

  • Trouble for normal users
    People who:

    • Travel a lot

    • Change SIM cards

    • Use dual SIM

    • Use WhatsApp on laptop for work
      will face frequent logouts.

  • Technical problems
Mobile phones don’t properly allow apps to check SIM all the time.

  • Privacy concerns
More tracking of SIM and device can affect user privacy.

  • Scammers may still cheat
    They can use:

    • Fake SIMs

    • Foreign numbers

    • Other apps not under this rule

  • Business disruption
Small businesses and customer support teams using WhatsApp Web may lose productivity.

Final simple conclusion

The government wants to reduce fraud by linking chat apps strictly to SIM cards.
But:

  • It is hard to implement technically

  • It may trouble normal users

  • And it may not fully stop scams

It can help a little — but it is not a complete solution.
